What do we do?
What is a school Governing Board?
The Governing Board is responsible for ensuring pupils receive a high-quality education. Governors work as a team with the Head Teacher in the strategic planning and management of the school.
Our responsibilities include consideration and agreement of the aims and policies of the school; discussion and approval of the targets for improvement; appointment of the Head Teacher and staff; setting and monitoring the budget; monitoring the performance of the school; and reporting to the parents and community on how we have accomplished our tasks.
What is the role?
School governors are volunteers. The information for prospective governors on the Gloucestershire County Council website gives a useful overview: www.gloucestershire.gov.uk/schoolsnet/governors.
We are a proactive team, committed to developing ourselves and the school. We draw on our skills and experience to sharing ideas and knowledge, and to challenge and support the school to be the best it can be.
How much time do we spend?
Typically, we spend about 2 hours per week in term time doing our role:
attend early evening meetings in school
- deliver actions from these meetings
- research, read and analyse reports, guidance and policies
- visit school during the teaching day to meet with teachers and children
- attend local and national governors’ associations briefings and conferences.
When are our meetings/visits?
Our school’s Full Governing Board meetings are held on Tuesdays from 6.00-8.30 pm, 6 per year.
Some governors also have statutory roles and/or sit on a Finance and Premises Committee. These meetings happen at various times throughout the year, depending on what needs to be discussed.
Governors are allocated a class and a curriculum subject to monitor through liaison with the teachers. It’s important for us to talk to teachers and children, so we each visit the school 4 times a year.
If you are interested in becoming a Governor or would like more information: get in touch with the School Office or directly with our Chair of Governors, Iola Garbett, on email@example.com.
